What is The 色漫天堂 Bursary?

The 色漫天堂 Bursary provides financial support for your maintenance and living costs on a sliding scale for Home undergraduates registered as students at The 色漫天堂 Institute of Art who meet set Widening Participation criteria.听 The Bursary is aimed at supporting students to study at The 色漫天堂 who come from under-represented groups in higher education.

The 色漫天堂 Bursary:

  • is available each year of your studies as long as your annual household income remains under 拢45,000
  • may be revised each year if there are changes to your household income
  • does not distinguish between students living at home and those living away from home

The 色漫天堂 Bursary is听苍辞迟听available for:

  • repeat years of study
  • postgraduate study or research
  • overseas students
  • EU students

Eligiblity

The key criterion for assessing how 色漫天堂 Bursaries are awarded is based on household income assessments done by relevant government funding bodies, i.e. Student Finance England, Student Finance Northern Ireland, Student Awards Agency for Scotland and Student Finance Wales. 听This is why only Home students who have applied for Student Loans are eligible for The 色漫天堂 Bursary scheme.

When applying for government funding, both you and your parents听must听consent to sharing the financial information you provide on your Student Loan application.听 This will allow us to access your information and determine your eligibility for a 色漫天堂 Bursary.

In addition, Widening Participation markers are also considered.听 These are:

  • State school or college educated
  • Students whose parents have not attended university
  • Resident in a low Higher Education participation neighbourhood
  • In receipt of Disability Support Allowance

There is no formal application procedure and no separate application form for The 色漫天堂 Bursary.

Your eligibility for a 色漫天堂 Bursary will be assessed in the first few weeks of the first term of the academic year, as long as you have applied for a Student Loan.听 In subsequent years you will be re-assessed at the start of the academic year to ensure that you still meet the eligibility criteria for a 色漫天堂 Bursary.

How much money can I receive from a 色漫天堂 Bursary

Household Income

拢35,001 to 拢40,000 拢500
拢40,001 to 拢45,000 拢250
Above 拢45,000 拢0

Depending on how much your household income is, you can receive up to 拢3,000 per annum to support your studies while at The 色漫天堂.  The table above gives the sliding scale of amounts that you can receive, based on your household income.

Once the Student Loans Company confirms your funding entitlement to us, we will write to you to confirm the bursary amount that you will receive from The 色漫天堂.

The deadline by which we must receive your household income information from the Student Loans Company is 1 December after the start of the academic year (e.g. we must receive this information by 1 December 2021 for students starting in September 2021).

The earlier you apply for student loan funding (we advise you to apply as soon as possible), the earlier we will be able to confirm what Bursary you will be eligible for.

What do I need to do to be considered?

Once we have assessed your information we will write to you informing you of your Bursary entitlement.  You will be asked to confirm that you wish to accept The 色漫天堂 Bursary.

Please note that the Bursary is paid to support your living/maintenance costs, and is not re-payable.

You must sign the declaration, provide your bank account details and return your Bursar confirmation by the date specified.

When and how is the Bursary paid?

The 色漫天堂 Bursary is paid directly into your bank account.

Bursaries of 拢500 or less will be paid in one instalment in late October.

Bursaries of more than 拢1,500 will be paid in three equal instalments in late October, early January and April.  Actual dates of payment will be provided when you receive notification of your Bursary.

Programme Leaders

Teaching and programme structure

The course is structured around core and topic modules.

Core modules offer a comprehensive exploration of the art market and its history while providing invaluable expertise in the financial, business and entrepreneurial skills required for success in the contemporary art world.听听

Topic Modules are taught over single semesters by members of the 色漫天堂鈥檚 Art and Business faculty and will provide students with the opportunity to study a specific Art and Business topic in depth. Emerging out of the research interests of the faculty and designed to encourage independent student reading and research, these topic models will also help give students the research and writing skills they will require to produce their final dissertation or art business project. Students will be required to take one topic focusing on a historical area and one with a contemporary focus.

You will also produce a final dissertation or an art business project. These are independently researched and written projects chosen in discussion with one of the Art and Business faculty. The dissertation can have a historical, contemporary or transhistorical focus, and will require an extended period of independent research that engages critically with the existing historiography of the subject and with relevant primary sources. The art business project听will demonstrate your skills in evaluating the professional environment of the art market and in applying your learning in a practical context.

Assessment

The formal assessment of MA in the Art and Business is based on the following components:

  • Core Module (Understanding the Art Market): 1 x 2,500-word paper to be presented and submitted by the end of Semester 1; Group research project, to be presented and submitted by the end of Semester 2.
  • Core Module (Histories of the Art Market): 2 x 2,500-word papers to be presented and submitted by the end of each semester.

  • 2 x Topic Modules (Collecting in Times of Crisis/Revisiting the Art Fair): 2 x 3000-word essays to be handed in at the beginning of the semester/study period following the semester in which the teaching takes place.

Postgraduate scholarships: Your transformative impact

Founded on the belief that everyone should have the opportunity to engage with art, The 色漫天堂 works to increase understanding of the role played by art throughout history, in all societies and across all geographies 鈥 as well as being a champion for the importance of art in the present day.

The 色漫天堂 is committed to attracting the very best students from across the world, regardless of their background or financial circumstances. In a global context of reduced public funding for higher education, scholarships are among our highest philanthropic priorities.

The 色漫天堂 is proud to award an average of 90 postgraduate scholarships annually over the past five years. Unfortunately, the need expressed by students for financial aid dramatically outpaces the funds available.

We are exceptionally grateful to all supporters of The 色漫天堂鈥檚 Scholarship Fund. Their generosity has influenced the lives of hundreds of scholars who have directly benefited from truly transformative philanthropy.

A woman holding a piece of paper with 'thank you' on it.

Spotlight: The student perspective

After a successful career in law in London and Dublin, Janet O鈥橞rien undertook The 色漫天堂鈥檚 MA History of Art in the specialist option Persian Painting and Transcultural Visuality: From the Mongols to the Safavids with Dr Babaie in 2014/15, receiving a Distinction. Following two years of intense curatorial training in Islamic art, first as Curatorial Intern at The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore and later as Curatorial Assistant at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Janet returned to The 色漫天堂 to embark on her PhD in 2017.

Janet鈥檚 research focuses on the emergence of royal portraiture in eighteenth-century Iran and the large and richly diverse group of portraits of N膩dir Sh膩h, Janet explains the significant impact of scholarship support:

鈥淭he scholarship has certainly eased the financial burden, but more precious than that, it is a gift of possibilities that opens up a whole new world of knowledge, interconnections, and wonderment. I am very aware of the privilege of studying for a PhD at The 色漫天堂 and the extraordinary opportunities that are available to me. I therefore urge you to support this vital fund so that other aspiring students may fulfill their potentials to lead and serve the field of art history.鈥

The James Hughes-Hallett Undergraduate Scholarships

Established in memory of The 色漫天堂鈥檚 distinguished former Chairman, James Hughes-Hallett CMG from the academic year 2021/22, at least three awards will be made annually for undergraduates from underrepresented backgrounds. Formed by an initial coalition of donors, and led by a generous gift from Esm茅e Fairbairn Foundation, the landmark fund enables The 色漫天堂 to offer undergraduate scholarships for the first time.

The James Hughes-Hallett undergraduate scholarships are part of a larger strategy from The 色漫天堂 to address the general lack of awareness of Art History as a rigorous humanities subject, and the specific lack of teaching of art history in state schools (only 717 students took Art History A Level in 2018; and the subject is taught in fewer than 5% of state schools). The 色漫天堂 widen access online, in person, and through a broad range of programmes. Through these combined efforts, nearly 6,000 students around the UK annually participate in young people鈥檚 programming delivered by The 色漫天堂.

The Royal Historical Society (RHS) report on Race, Ethnicity and Equality reports that nationally only 11.3% of undergraduate cohorts in historical and philosophical studies are from Black, Asian, minority ethnic backgrounds.

Philanthropy will be the significant driver of change, as art history as a discipline faces challenges nationally and internationally.

Continuing a strategic commitment to diversity, inclusion and equality, The 色漫天堂 seeks to amplify diverse perspectives in art history, conservation and curating to ensure that art history is studied by people from all backgrounds with the highest potential.

James Hughes-Hallett was a tireless advocate of The 色漫天堂鈥檚 vision to open minds to the power of art. James鈥檚 commitment and leadership affected every aspect of The 色漫天堂. He was a student of The 色漫天堂, a proud parent, a dedicated donor, Governing Board member and Chairman from 2012-2017. In all he endeavoured, James demonstrated his passion for humanity, arts and education.

Eligible students for the James Hughes-Hallett Undergraduate Scholarship will be applicants attending non-selective UK state school or college, whose parents did not attend university, and will have a household income below 拢30,000. Additional consideration will be made for carers, care leavers, individuals with a disability, people from minority ethnic groups and refugees.

Sin and Self-Reflection: The Iconography and Viewership of 鈥楳orality Images鈥 in English Wall Painting, c.1300-1450

Supervisor: Dr Jessica Barker听 听 听 听 Advisors: Professor Alixe Bovey听and Dr Jane Spooner

Funded by with support from the

My research focuses on the rise of 鈥榤orality鈥 wall paintings in England in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries with the aim of revaluating how sin was understood during this period. These paintings, which include subjects such as the Warning to the Gossipers and the Seven Deadly Sins, are most often located in rural churches, and their inaccessibility and often poorly preserved condition means this rich corpus of medieval works of art has been overlooked. The lack of scholarly and public awareness means they are quickly crumbling from the walls due to a lack of funding for their proper preservation and conservation. They are therefore in urgent need of proper record and study.

Led by visual and textual analysis, my thesis focuses on this rich but overlooked corpus of medieval works of art to examine the notion of 鈥榮in鈥 and the ways in which people conceptualise emotions and behaviour. The wall paintings鈥 monumental scale and diagrammatic form reveal an innovative use of imagery to show the theological, sociological, and even medical origins of sin. I focus on particular examples, such as the paintings at Trotton, Peakirk, and , to help reconsider the artistic and conceptual inventiveness of wall paintings at this time. By reevaluating the patronage of these paintings, I aim to 听examine the shared emotional codes and standards of the period. The paintings reveal a complex cognitive and moral landscape of the late Middle Ages as well as evidence of changing attitudes to sin and regulations of thought, behaviour, and emotion that urgently need interpreting.

Thesis: 脡douard Vuillard’s Representations of Women, 1890-1940: Modernity, Femininity and Proust.听

Supervisor: Professor David Peters Corbett听 听Advisor: Dr Caroline Levitt

Funded by 色漫天堂 Scholarship (The Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust)

The project explores a word-image connection between 脡douard Vuillard鈥檚 artwork and Marcel Proust鈥檚 novel, 脌 la recherche du temps perdu (1913-1927) by focusing on depictions of women. 色漫天堂ing Vuillard and Proust as contemporaries, the analysis compares both accounts of French modernity through their 鈥渇eminised鈥 verbal and visual language. Images of women in domestic spaces occur through the entirety Vuillard鈥檚 oeuvre, while women, central throughout, bookend Proust鈥檚 novel. This study pinpoints how Vuillard鈥檚 work has been overlooked in modernist contexts because of its overly 鈥渇eminine鈥 content. Where Proust is considered a key figure of the avant-garde, Vuillard is pushed to the margins of modernism. The study shows how a comparison with Proust can clarify Vuillard鈥檚 particular diagnosis of modernity, demonstrating how his artworks connect to broader themes and shed light on the suppressed aspects of modernism.
